Identification vs. Authentication

Identification

WHO is the signer?

Identification establishes the identity of a person before they sign. It answers the question: is this person really who they claim to be? Methods include ID document scans, bank-based verification (iDIN), and government identity systems.

Authentication

Authentication is the method used to verify the signer's identity at the moment of signing. It provides the proof: a one-time SMS code, an email link, a DigiD login, or a qualified certificate from a trust service provider.
